Option 1: fly Bangkok to Koh Samui

Bangkok Airways runs approximately 171 flights per week from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Koh Samui Airport (USM, สนามบินเกาะสมุย) (verified by SHA Thailand editorial, April 2026). Flight time: 65 to 75 minutes. Fares start at $77 to $96 one way if you book 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Book within a week of travel or during school holidays and prices jump to $139 and above. Bangkok Airways has near-monopoly on this route, which keeps prices higher than most domestic Thai routes.

Koh Samui Airport is compact and central on the island’s north-east coast. From the airport to Chaweng Beach: 10 minutes, $8 to $11 by taxi (Google Maps, April 2026). Don Mueang (DMK) doesn’t serve Samui. If you’re flying from DMK, either connect at Suvarnabhumi or travel overland to Surat Thani.

A cheaper flight alternative: fly Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport (URT) on AirAsia or Thai Lion Air, then take a bus and ferry to Samui. Surat Thani flights often run $22 to $33, and the bus + ferry adds $19 to $26. Total: $42 to $60, and the whole journey takes 4 to 5 hours. Compare Bangkok to Samui flight prices →

Option 2: night train to Surat Thani, then ferry

Night trains depart Bangkok Hua Lamphong station (สถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง) from 17:05 onwards (operator schedule, 2026). They arrive at Phun Phin station (the Surat Thani stop) between 05:30 and 08:30 the next morning.

Second-class air-conditioned sleeper: $35 to $43 for an upper berth. Lower berths cost slightly more. First-class cabin: $49 to $54. Book on the State Railway of Thailand website or through 12go at least three days ahead. For Friday night departures in high season, book a week out.

From Phun Phin, an operator shuttle bus runs to Donsak Pier (70 kilometres away). Allow 1 hour 30 minutes for the land leg. The Seatran or Lomprayah ferry from Donsak to Nathon Pier on Samui takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours (Lomprayah / Seatran). Total door-to-door: roughly 14 hours. Total cost: $47 to $80. See the full Surat Thani to Koh Samui ferry guide for the Donsak Pier connection details.

Option 3: Lomprayah combined bus and catamaran ticket

Lomprayah sells a joint bus + high-speed catamaran ticket from Bangkok for $38 to $40 (Lomprayah). Pickup point: Khao San Road area (ถนนข้าวสาร). Departure around 07:00. The bus covers Bangkok to Surat Thani in around 9 hours (verified by SHA Thailand editorial, April 2026). Lomprayah’s catamaran handles the crossing to Nathon Pier on Samui in 45 minutes. Arrival on Samui: 18:00 to 19:00 the same day. Total: 11 to 12 hours.

The joint ticket means Lomprayah manages the connection. If the bus runs late, the catamaran waits. Book at least 2 days in advance. In December and January, book 7 days ahead. Book the Lomprayah combined ticket →

Option 4: independent overnight bus, then ferry

The lowest cost route: overnight VIP bus from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (สถานีขนส่งผู้โดยสารกรุงเทพ สายใต้ใหม่, Sai Tai Mai) departing 18:00 to 21:00 (operator schedule, 2026), arriving Surat Thani the next morning. Bus fare: $14 to $22. Add a taxi or shuttle to Donsak Pier (included with most ferry tickets if you buy a combined ticket), then the ferry to Samui at $10 to $26. Total: $23 to $36. Total journey: 16 to 18 hours.

The Southern Bus Terminal sits on the west side of Bangkok. From the BTS or MRT, allow 30 to 60 minutes to get there depending on your starting point. During evening rush hour from Sukhumvit, add another 20 to 30 minutes.

Which route to choose

Four days or fewer on Samui and budget isn’t the main constraint: fly. The 75-minute flight is worth more than the price premium for a short trip.

Budget traveller with flexibility: the Lomprayah combined ticket at $39 to $40 covers the full journey in 11 to 12 hours, removes connection risk, and is the best value-to-speed ratio of the ground options.

You want the journey to be part of the trip: the night train. A sleeper berth from Hua Lamphong, an arrival in Surat Thani at sunrise, and the ferry across to Samui is a legitimate way to start a trip. It takes 14 hours and costs around $56, more than the Lomprayah option, but a different experience.

The independent overnight bus + ferry is the cheapest at under $36 but also the most time-consuming and logistically involved. It works well if you know how the connections work and don’t mind arriving tired.

Where to stay on Koh Samui

Silavadee Pool Spa Resort

On the hillside between Chaweng and Lamai, with a chain of infinity pools stepping down to a Gulf of Thailand view. Rooms are large and genuinely quiet. The trade-off: you need transport for restaurants and the beach. Nothing is walkable. Works well if you’re here to decompress rather than explore.

Best for: couples, spa stays, sea views

COSI Samui Chaweng Beach

Clean, consistent rooms on Chaweng Beach with a rooftop pool. Built for travellers who want location without paying resort prices. Rooms are compact. You’re paying for the address, not the square footage. Steps from the beach and the night market strip.

Best for: mid-budget, Chaweng access, short stays

Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort

An ethical elephant sanctuary with accommodation in the hills of central Samui. You stay among rescued elephants, not on a beach. The resort runs its own daily sanctuary tours. If your priority is beach time, this isn’t the right base. If you want something genuinely different, there’s nothing else like it on the island.

Best for: families, nature experience, unique stays
