One of the most beautiful places in Thailand is Phi Phi Island. It is actually a group of six islands, but only the biggest one is populated (Koh Phi Phi Don). Maya Bay, where the famous Hollywood movie “The Beach,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was shot, helped make the area famous. 46 km away from Koh Phi Phi are the resort islands of Phuket, Koh Lanta, and the well-known Krabi district. All of these places are well-known and loved. Most travelers get to and from Koh Phi Phi from one of these three places. Koh Phi Phi can only be reached by ferries or speed boats on the water, like many other islands in Thailand. At the entrance to the island, you will have to pay a 20-baht tax.

Important Tip About Ferries to Phi Phi

It’s a good idea to get to the starting point at least half an hour or even an hour before the boat leaves. This is so you can get a good seat and not have to wait in line for a long time for the ferry that will leave afterward. A travel ticket should also be bought ahead of time, even the day before. That way, the price will be lower and you’ll be sure to have a spot (during peak tourism seasons the tickets are snapped up like hot cakes). You can buy tickets at travel agencies in your area or online. You can also get a detailed, up-to-date schedule of when the ships leave.

The ships that go to and from Ko Phi Phi dock at Klong Jirad Pier, which is 3 km south of Krabi. So, the area is also known as Phi-Phi Island Pier. The ride on the ferry takes about 90 minutes, depending on the weather and the waves. Four ferries leave each way every day, starting at 9 a.m. and leaving about every two hours (the last one leaves at 3 pm). Most hotels and places of interest on Koh Phi Phi are close to the docking point. From there, you can walk or take a short taxi ride. A ticket on this kind of ferry starts at 450 baht.

The sun deck is usually on the upper deck of the ferry, which is a better place to sit. During the cruise, you can feel the breeze from the water and see the scenery. The lower floor of the ferry is covered and has air conditioning if you are hot and want to stay out of the sun. It also usually has a small stand where you can buy drinks and snacks.

A speed boat is another way to travel between Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. The boat makes the trip much faster than the ferry (about a 45-minute cruise instead of an hour and a half), and it’s more fun and real than the Andaman Sea of Thailand. You can get picked up by the speedboats from the beach closest to your hotel or resort. If not, you can ask the hotel to send a minivan or a taxi to take you to the departure point so you don’t have to carry a lot of bags and luggage. Of course, this option is much more expensive than taking the ferry, but it can be a good choice for people who like to travel in style and are flexible with their schedules. Especially if you are traveling with a group, this can be a good idea. The price of this kind of attraction ranges from 8,000 to 13,000 baht, depending on the type of boat you choose (6-passenger boat). It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t take a fast boat during the rainy season, when the sea can be very rough and the trip can be both dangerous and unpleasant (referring to the period between September and November in particular).

If you want to get the most out of your vacation, you’ll be glad to know that local tour companies also offer boat trips between Krabi and Koh Phi Phi, which will be a pleasant way to get there. You can stop at interesting places, do things in the water like snorkeling, and eat a meal on the boat with a great view of the water. The boat will take you to the island at the end of the day.
